Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios has taken the traditional haunted house celebrated during Halloween and ran with it. Now in it’s 22nd year, Universal serves up the screams and the scares with several haunted houses, scream zones, and shows.
Each year, Universal offers an entirely new haunted house experience for each of it’s haunted houses with the 2012 event offering a 3-D experience where guests will be able to wear 3-D glasses as they travel through the a Las Vegas experience covered in nuclear ooze. Other houses will be based on the AMC television networks “The Walking Dead” and video game maker Konami’s Silent Hill. A fourth house will be based on rocker Alice Cooper.
Penn & Teller New(kd) Las Vegas
The magic duo will bring 3D illusions to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in 2012 with their gory take on a Las Vegas strip gone bad. Their haunted house will guide guests into a dark, dilapidated and radioactive version of “Sin City,” where it will be as if one of their magic tricks has gone terribly awry and the city has been covered in nuclear ooze. The maze will feature the best (or worst – depending on your personal taste) of Las Vegas including showgirls, slot machines, a little white wedding chapel, and an all-you-can-eat buffet in which all will be covered with a glowing toxic green hue.
“Universal Horror Nights can scare the living Elvis out of you, and me & Teller, well, we’ve been known to take things a bit too far. Now we’re working together on showing you what it would be like to live in a post-nuclear explosion Sin City. C’mon by, but remember, you’re not playing with children here,” said Penn Jillette, the larger, louder half of the duo.
The Walking Dead
AMC’S “The Walking Dead” haunted house will feature hordes of flesh-hungry, growling walkers or zombies. Universal states that the haunted maze will feature eerily authentic, elaborately designed, movie-quality sets that include some of the most iconic locations and scenes from the show. Mobs of undead walkers bring to life the vicious, hungry, zombies from the show.
“We want people to experience the same terror of the walker-filled reality our characters faced in seasons one and two – and will continue to face in our third season,” said Greg Nicotero, Co-Executive Producer and Special Effects Make-up Artist for the series. “Our collaboration with Universal Studios’ creative teams is exciting as we work to truly capture the essence of the show”.
Another Haunted House will be featured on video game maker Konami’s Silent Hill series that will be Universal’s first partnership with a video game company. “This is our first partnership with a video game property and we are very excited to create an unparalleled, all-new level of horror for our guests,” said Jim Timon, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Universal Orlando Resort.
In between the haunted houses, Universal has areas of the park that they call scare zones where actors in costumes will chase you around with scary masks and pretend chainsaws. The scare zones can almost be as intense as the houses themselves and continues to keep you on your toes while you are at the event.
Two shows will also be held on event nights including the very popular Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure that we recommend for teenagers and an extreme drumming experience called Death Drums.
